A Banig is a handwoven mat usually used in East Asia and the Philippines for sleeping and sitting. This type of mat was traditionally made in the Philippines. However, it has been more widely used too.

Basey is a municipality in Samar, Philippines. It is known for its woven products such as mats, wall decorations, placemats, and the famous — sleeping mat known as “banig”.

The banig or mats measure around 2×3 meters and as thin as a chipboard. A banig is usually made from “tikog”, a special reed grass that grows in swampy areas along rice fields and has solid, jointless, and usually triangular stems.

Banig weaving is the common source of income of people in almost any part of Samar, most especially by the housewives.

DESIGN BRIEF

The Philippines has pride in its abundant natural resources and creative people. Basey, Samar is recognized for its colorful and woven tikog-based items and handicrafts, particularly the multi-purpose mats, which can be used as a material for the manufacture and fabrication of other products.

The Jose is a lounge chair covered with decorative tikog mats made from Basey, Samar. It is inspired by a half-sphere or cocoon-like design. The structure is built of cushion and wood. This chair adds a decorative Filipino design to your interiors.

Rattan is a climbing or trailing vine-like palm found in the tropical rainforests of Asian countries, with the Philippines being the primary source. It's no surprise that the original creators/weavers are here because it's always been a part of our culture.

Rattan is most often regarded as the preferred raw material for crafts and binding due to its durability. The stem or cane of rattan is solid, strong, uniform, and highly flexible for craft weaving.

Woven rattan furniture and other handicraft goods manufactured from natural organic materials are sold along the roadway leading to Cebu's national highway.

DESIGN BRIEF

Since the furniture industry in Cebu is gaining recognition because of its world-class designs and high-quality products, It inspires me to innovate intelligent designs towards a sustainable future.

The Elizabeth is a lounge armchair with a decorated wooded crown. The crest of a peacock inspires it. Inside the light and open structure, I wanted users to feel relaxed and comfortable.

The structure and the crown are built of rattan, and the seat and cushions can be upholstered in a variety of fabric colors. With its aesthetic and materials, it feels like you are close to nature.
